With only a handful of exceptions, there have been American football games on every single Thanksgiving Day since 1920. And with over 100 years of history, are you surprised that there have been an exceptional number of crazy Thanksgiving NFL blunders?
Unless you’re extremely susceptible to the cringe, we think you’re going to enjoy this rundown through some of the most crazy Thanksgiving NFL moments. But if you don’t like to cringe, maybe just watch a few videos of kittens and puppies instead.
Introducing the Butt Fumble
If you’re new to crazy Thanksgiving NFL moments, you might not have heard about the Butt Fumble. But for many of you, the Butt Fumble is the creme de la creme of crazy Thanksgiving NFL moments.
It’s got a little bit of everything. It is outrageous, unexpected, hilarious and so very memorable. So let’s relive it.
It’s 2012 and we’re in the MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. It’s the second quarter of a game between the New York Jets and the New England Patriots. Quarterback Mark Sanchez is running with the ball during a busted play. Then he busts his face right into the ass of his teammate Brandon Moore. This fumble was recovered by Steve Gregory from the Patriots who returned for a touchdown.
When coin flips go wrong
Well, depending on what side of the fence you’re on, maybe this was a very fortuitous coin flip. But for Jerome Bettis, it was quite possibly the worst coin flip of his life.
It’s over time during a Pittsburgh Steelers vs Detroit Lions game. The official is going to determine who goes first by flipping a coin. Bettis is calling tails for the Steelers. Or is it heads? That’s where the confusion starts and ends for the two teams and the officials. When the coin lands and it’s tails, Bettis thinks he’s won. But the official is convinced he heard Bettis saying heads.
So the Lions start the overtime play and go on to win the game. Bettis, on the other hand, is absolutely fuming. And that much is clear from the footage!
Mind the snow
When the snow starts falling, we’re all a little more careful to watch our step. But during a crazy Thanksgiving NFL game, that’s easier said than done. A blocked kick towards the end of a game between the Cowboys and the Dolphins leaves the Cowboys in a great position. If they don’t do anything else, they’ll be crowned the champions. All that they have to do is not touch the ball.
But a stumbling, fumbling Cowboys’ Leon Lett ends up slipping on the snow and falling on the ball. The ball, now live, is there for the taking. And an enterprising Peter Stoyanovich scores from the one-yard line with less than five seconds to go. He wins the game for the Dolphins, leaving Lett with an embarrassing legacy and a lost match for his team.
