1. Wimbledon’s proper name is The Championships, Wimbledon
But everyone calls it Wimbledon or, occasionally, The Championships.
2. Wimbledon 2022 kicks off on Monday, 27 June
Every year the tournament takes place on either the last Monday in June or the first in July. This year we’ve got a June start date.

Before Wimbledon, you’ve got the Australian Open and the French Open. Then afterwards, the Grand Slams for 2022 finish with the US Open.
7. This is the only major still played on grass
Grass is certainly traditional in the world of tennis, however, Wimbledon is the only big tournament that is still played out on the surface. Other Opens use clay or hard courts.
8. 2022 is the first Wimbledon without a rest day
Up until 2022, there’s been a rest day on the middle Sunday of every Wimbledon Grand Slam. Not so this year. The players will be batting their rackets for 14 consecutive days. Hopefully they won’t be too tired, because the day after what’s usually the rest day is…
9. Wimbledon 2022’s Manic Monday won’t be quite so Manic
Manic Monday is so-called because it’s a super busy day, with last-16 matches for both sexes. Fans can watch any of their favourites on this one day, which is not possible in a single day in any other Grand Slam.
This year Manic Monday would’ve fallen on the 4 July (Independence Day for USA readers). However, due to playing being staged on Sunday too, these matches will be spread out across the two days. Organisers are hoping this will lead to better quality action and gives fans a bit more of a chance to see a variety of games.
10. There’s no Wimbledon Public Ballot for 2022
Usually punters can get tickets for Wimbledon via Public Ballot. As they’re so in demand and quite limited, it’s the fairest way of distributing them. However, this year, tickets will be automatically given to those who were successful in the 2020 Public Ballot instead.
So if you want to watch the action, you’re better off catching it on TV or streaming it online. And make sure your name is down nice and early for Wimbledon 2023.
